What Justice Kennedy’s Retirement Means for Congressman Holding’s Constituents
The Fate of Our Healthcare System is At Stake
Raleigh, NC – Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy’s retirement should cause Congressman George Holding’s constituents to be very afraid! To be sure, Kennedy was a conservative justice, but he was also often a “swing vote” on an exceedingly politicized US Supreme Court, providing the deciding majority vote on any number of issues important to the progressive community.
Reaction from Democrats and the progressive community was to “sound the alarm.”
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-New York) tweeted,
“This is a line that has been drawn about whether we are going to criminalize women for making decisions about their bodies. This is not a drill.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) warned,
“This is the most important #SCOTUS vacancy for this country in at least a generation. Nothing less than the fate of our health care system, reproductive rights for women, and countless other protections for middle-class Americans are at stake.”
Tax March https://twitter.com/taxmarch tweeted,
“The future of our rights and so much of the progress we’ve made is now at stake with Justice Kennedy’s retirement.”
In what may be the biggest example of hypocrisy yet recorded, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) called on senators to make sure the president’s nominee would be “considered fairly” without being subjected to personal or character attacks. You may recall that McConnell unilaterally blocked President Barack Obama’s nominee for the Court for 18 months, claiming Obama’s successor should make the appointment. Republicans would not meet with Judge Merrick Garland, he was not given the opportunity to be vetted by the Senate Judiciary Committee, and McConnell said the full Senate would not vote.
Congressman George Holding will, undoubtedly, continue to vote as the Party leadership demands, leaving working families in NC’s Congressional District 2 to worry about their rights, freedoms, and healthcare.
